"Are you at all claustrophobic?" asked my facialist.
It’s not a question I’ve ever been asked before in a beauty spa. But I was about to go under the plaster of Paris-like mask for the first time, in a Sodashi Thermal Infusing Facial.
I was at The Sanctuary Day Spa at Mollies, is in the small but perfectly formed spa rooms behind the boutique hotel in Tweed Street in St Mary’s Bay in Auckland.
In my experience this was definitely the most unique facial I’ve ever had. I seriously adored the facial. In fact, I came out saying to my mother when I saw her afterwards, "I feel like a new woman."
I do look like the loser in a cream pie contest, but this photo is actually me in the thermal infusion, and it’s not creamy, it’s rock solid.
My fantastic facialist, Sharon Moriarty, says clients can be quite fascinated with the mask after the treatment and want to see it, and I can see why. It is like meringue, that hardens to a cement texture due to the reaction between the active ingredients, including volcanic ash.
It is completely painless and feels very cool – not at all hot – when it goes on. Sharon eased it off around the edges of the white mesh to release the airlock and it simply peeled off in one piece.
The background of Sodashi is a holistic one, with a vision to be the world’s leading 100% chemical-free skincare and spa therapy brand. They have a commitment to working in harmony with nature’s intelligence; with an emphasis on "wholeness, purity and radiance" – which in Sanskrit is ‘Sodashi.’
The brand has been going for a decade, with founder Megan Larsen combining her knowledge of aromatherapy, biochemistry and Ayurveda to develop the range which includes both professional spa use and retail products for home use.
Thread.co.nz likes that Sodashi is a botanically-based line which uses the regenerative and anti-ageing qualities of plant essences and other natural ingredients sourced for their purity, potency and therapeutic qualities. There are no chemicals, preservatives or fragrances used in manufacturing – done in Australia – and they are not tested on animals. It follows of course that packaging is recyclable and printed with natural vegetable dyes.
Here in Auckland, Sodashi treatments at The Sanctuary Day Spa at Mollies range from the Sodashi signature facial at $165 for 75 minutes, to the Sodashi thermal infusing facial at $250 for 90 minutes.
Sodashi has a retail line of products for skincare use at home. I’m looking forward to using the Sodashi Fitness Recovery Body Oil in their BECALM line for the body.
Below: A statue looks serenely out over a few of the products used in my facial.
I’m feeling very calm and centered after my facial. And my skin? Very soft, and incredibly hydrated.
