Wondering what to wear to the races? It seems like anything goes but there are some unwritten rules and some written ones, too! It brings out the best- and the worst. Here’s what women are wearing at Ellerslie.
Pictured left: sisters Olivia and Charlotte Moor always get it right, and both have been fashion in the field winners on Boxing Day.
Those stripped-feather fascinators are OUT. Wide brimmed hats are perfect for the sun-smart. We also liked the mini boaters on a few heads.
Smaller, structured hats look great too. These two have netting and there’s even a turban. These women made it to the finals.
These two have got to be the youngest competitors we’ve ever seen. The gorgeous girls were chaperoned by their aunt, who also entered the Derby Day competition.
The traditional colours to wear to Derby Day are black and white (or cream and white.) If you don’t have a dress that’s both, why not wear a LBD and team it with either black, or white accessories? Here it’s done elegantly by Natalie-Rose Rutherford, Abbylee Childs and Duchesne Alder.
Entrants in Mercedes Prix de Fashion don’t adhere to tradition, wearing a rainbow of colours and prints.
Creme de la creme: the five finalists and regional winners Charlotte Moor, Marion Farrell, Kelli Odell (grand winner), Sharday Mitha, and Vanessa Green.
The worst look of the day – and they didn’t choose the outfit themselves- had to be the camel toe Lycra on the promo girls at the Stella Artois tent.
And lastly, here’s what Thread.co.nz’s Megan and Rachel wore to the Telecom Derby Day on Saturday 6 March. We both went for fun headbands instead of hats, and Rachel made her own necklace, available online at heart & crafty.
