I’d never been to the Easter Show as a kid.
It was always over-priced and over-crowded.
So I jumped at the chance to attend the Coke Easter show at Auckland Showgrounds and was very pleasantly surprised at the value and fun we had. They’ve re-jigged it so that you pay a flat fee of $25 per adult which includes up to three children aged to 12 years, and a myriad of free activities once inside.
With babies and toddlers in tow, we arrived at the dot of opening time at 10am, and there was plenty of free street parking (or$8 in the field opposite) and no queues at all, being a weekday. Tomorrow – Good Friday – is expected to be very busy as it’s a public holiday of course. But for now it was mums and buggies galore.
We started at the Farm World end and saw the prize cows and bulls competing for awards, then the petting farm animals including a litter of piglets which was the cutest thing I’ve seen in a long time.
At Alpaca Art & Design in the farm world section.

It was onto the Canadian Bushwhackers chainsaw timber display and our Jody was the lucky winner of a children’s wooden chair he made! By coincidence, she’s also Canadian so that was very fitting.
Then we stopped by the Looney Tunes concert but this wasn’t so much our cup of tea as it was pre-recorded music and singing and probably better for older kids nearer school age.
The Zirca Circus was a real highlight. We got there early for front row seats and the children were in awe for almost an hour at the Chinese acrobats, clowns, juggling, and death-defying motocycle stuntmen.
All in all, the show was great value and we’ll be back again next year.
