We love going to Kelly Tarlton’s. But the old girl has been around 27 years and is no spring water chicken.

This month, it has undergone a $5.5 million upgrade from Merlin Entertainments and has re-launched as Kelly Tarlton’s SEA LIFE Aquarium.

The main difference is the penguin train ride is gone, replaced with a new walk-through penguin encounter.

Now you can get face to face with a Gentoo and King penguin, although the night we went the Kings were being a bit royally snobby, but this little Gentoo guy below was completely charming everybody.

The Shark Tunnel – which was the first in the world – now has and is now Maori Pacifica concrete statues as though off a shipwreck.

There’s also New Zealand’s first-ever live jellyfish display (actually incredibly beautiful up close), the world’s only display of Spiny Sea Dragons and the world’s biggest species of stingray.
