Appropriately, the Anna Sui book cover has pattern and print and texture, just like her famous designs.
The dramatic black hardcover tome ‘Anna Sui by Andrew Bolton’, out on Chronicle Books, contains a retrospective from 1990 to 2009 of the fashion designer’s highlights and collections.
The introduction is by world-renowned fashion photographer Steven Meisel, and who better to comment on such a visually-important icon?
The preface is by musician Jack White, also from Detroit, who is married to model Karen Elson who often wears Anna Sui dresses.
I particularly enjoyed the photographs of Madonna wearing Anna Sui, and rock n roll has always been Anna Sui’s muse and comes through in all her designing. You can see glimpses of how she herself was a little bit punk or goth earlier on.
She started her label in 1990 and began catwalk shows in 1991 with an Autumn Winter collection influenced by Swinging London, despite being an American designer.
Linda Evangelista and Naomi Cambell walked in the show and feature in full page photographs in the shiny PVC jackets and houndstooth check minis and micro shorts.
It’s not all photos, though. The text is as interesting as the photographs, as Sui explains her inspirations behind each collection. This would be an invaluable resource for fashion design students as well as anyone interested in Anna Sui or the fashion design industry itself.
Many know the name from her successful perfume line which makes the designer’s brand so accessible to many. Owning some of her fashion line is aspirational for most. But this book is the perfect way to get a glimpse into her world of colour, print and design, and will never go out of style.
