The Modern Girl’s Guide to Hatmaking by Mary Jane Baxter is a creative how-to craft book on hatmaking with easy to difficult hat-making projects to create at home.

Mary Jane Baxter teaches hat making at The Kensington and Chelsea College in London and is a columnist for craft magazines in Angland and reports on craft for the BBC TV and radio.

I was interested to see that she had worked with milliner Stephen Jones, whom we heard at iD Dunedin 2013. Read about Stephen Jones at iD here on Thread.

Many of the projects in this book can be made in an evening, so they’re accessible to beginners and for those without sewing experience, she takes you through the basics at the start of the book. You move through the projects to more complicated hats that look quite stunning.

I actually preferred the skills to the actual hats. The flower-making masterclass was one of the best bits.

Here are some pictures from the book to inspire you to get started…

Travel hat.

My personal favourite – Pretty Petals hat.

Fabulous 50’s Percher

Trim your hat.

Teardrop Emergency – made from a cereal box!

The Modern Girl’s Guide to Hatmaking by Mary Jane Baxter is $49.99 and is published by Kyle Books and distributed in New Zealand by New Holland Publishers.
