Katie Battersby is an emerging New Zealand fashion designer with a difference.
Instead of taking the usual path, of a fashion degree, she studied sculpture at Elam, "which may explain my unorthodox approach!" she says.
Her love of design combines with her interest in cinema in her current SS12 collection, Roma.
Roma pays homage to Italy as seen on film as in classics such as Fellini’s Roma which lends its title to her collection, as well as Roman Holiday, Room with a View, Voyage to Italy, and I am Love.
She uses white linen in her summery dresses and florals emblazoned on singlet dresses and skull motifs, all on white. Dresses retail for $250, tees $180, and singlets $160.
"My favourite piece is the ‘Oliva’ dress" says Katie. "I love the purity of white on white and the sheerness of this hanky-weight linen."

Key pieces in her collection include the ‘Amore’ shift dress $250, ‘Pesca’ long shift dress $250, ‘Rosa’ mid sleeve dress $250, ‘Roma’ tee $180, ‘Italia’ tee $180 and ‘Gelato’ tee $180.
