Eyes on you: new eyewear trends – did you know purple is hot right now? – and how to pick glasses to suit your face shape…
We chat eyewear trends with eyewear expert Rebecca Demetriou. Rebecca is the Senior Buyer for OPSM and has been in the role for over four years. Prior to that she was a buyer at Harrods in London.
1. What are some upcoming eyewear trends that we will be seeing coming out next season?
The oversized shape we’re going to continue to see throughout the coming collections. Larger, bolder styles are coming through in both men’s and women’s frames. The cat-eye is a new shape that is working well for us, and colour! Colour is increasingly popular with people moving away from the staple black and brown. As far as colours go, a personal favourite is blue for men and purple for women.
In saying that, I think an overarching trend that we are seeing in the fashion world is individualism. Expressing your own style is definitely in, and there is no better way of doing that than through your pair of frames.
2. How do you find buying for such a diverse range of labels? Do you tend to buy for the same trends while buying for such different demographics?
I love the challenge of buying for such a diverse range of labels and consumers. There are so many great brands at OPSM to choose from and that makes my job as buyer really fun. At times there are certainly the same trends that flow across different brands but I do try to vary the trends to make sure I capture the essence of a particular brand.
3. Do you find eyewear and fashion trends tend to run parallel to one another?
Absolutely! A great example is Dolce and Gabbana. The eyewear takes inspiration from the latest catwalk collections. This season the filigrana collection that was seen during the latest Autumn/Winter catwalk show has been meticulously interpreted into the temples of the optical frame DG3185-simply stunning!
4. Can you give us a run-down on how to pick glasses to suit your face shape? What are some pointers to avoid buying optical eyewear that might be on trend but doesn’t suit your face?
The easiest way to choose the perfect pair is to find a shape that is opposite to your face shape. For example, if you have a round shaped face, choose an angular/rectangular style. The fit of the frame is also important. Make sure the pair fits your face and is comfortable -you will be wearing them for most of the day after all! Also consider your skin tone. Make sure that you choose a colour that will enhance your complexion. The team at OPSM are all experts in finding the perfect frame for you, so if you feel uncomfortable, just ask!
5. What would you say is the most universally flattering optical shape? Are there any styles that suit everyone?
The wayfarer shape suits everyone and it is a real classic that is still on trend. It’s a unisex style that suits all kinds of face shapes. My favourites are the Ray-Ban RX5184 and the evolution RX5228. Below, the Ray-Ban Wayfarer $299
6. What current trends in eyewear would you say stay relevant in a few years time? What few key styles from any OPSM brand would therefore be a good investment piece?
The Cat-Eye shape is our new best selling shape. This means that it will be around for a few years. My favourite best seller is the Prada PR 03QV. It comes in various colours, including the exclusive Tortoiseshell/Pink. Below, Prada 03QV $499
7. What’s your next eyewear purchase going to be?
My next Eyewear purchase is going to be the new Dolce & Gabbana frame from the Filagree collection in violet, DG3185. I love the unique combination of the coloured acetate and beautiful antique gold filigree, it is on-trend and purple flatters my skin tone.
Dolce and Gabbana Filigrana, $569:
