Millinery. The art of hats. Is there possibly anything more quaint or charming than the manufacturing of elegant headpieces?

Natalie Chan has taken on the dream career of doing just that, creating both subtle and extravagant headwear.

Upon arrival to Cartier for Flowers – Natalie Chan’s mother’s beautiful shop – on Teed Street in Newmarket for Chan’s Millinery launch giggling women were greeted by life size fairies wearing pretty dresses and elaborate make-up courtesy of Phoenix Cosmetics.

Also on offer were endless glasses of champagne and tiny sandwiches, all of which added to the overall charm of the experience.

Chan’s hats and headpieces were on display in the middle of the store thus, everywhere you looked there was something interesting and beautiful to look at. From the shelves of gorgeous glass vases and crystal ornaments to the feathers and butterflies adorning her creations it was a veritable treat for the senses.

Special mention must be made of the cupcakes too; perhaps a small part of the experience but for a non-cake eater like me having two of them is somewhat a revelation, a testament to just how fantastic they were.

The hats themselves were delightful and each one was unique to the collection, ideal for many occasions, weddings, races, picnics and parties. Dark pieces for evening wear, pale pieces romantic enough for afternoon tea and colour laden stand out pieces to make sure you are the centre of attention wherever you go. Structural and couture, Chan’s headpieces are just what you need to add that extra bit of class to an outfit.

The ‘Falling Bloom’ artwork commissioned for Chan is stunning. Placed in prime position as you entered the store it is an outstanding accompaniment to the collection of hats. The artwork is 3D and rotates as you walk past, it is beautiful, unusual and well worth a look.

All in all an evening full of girly delight!
