Some brands stand the test of time. You can remember your Dad in them (albeit in Stubbies) and now they’re all over the streets on New York on hip young things.
New Balance is one of these timeless brands. In fact the very same shoes in the faded yellow photographs of your young Dad are probably pretty much like the latest styles that are selling like hotcakes and featuring on Japanese blogs and NYC streetstyle photos. When I was in Platypus Shoes in Auckland city, they said they couldn’t keep one New Balance style on the shelf, they were so popular.
Good news – the hip 574 sneakers are out this summer in women’s sizes too. Up until now women have had to buy small men’s sneakers to get their 574 fix. But it’s not all retro suede; there are 51 casual shoes, 132 training shoes, children’s shoes, and football boots. New Balance is also a gold partner with NZ Breast Cancer Foundation with some special pink sneakers, one of which is pictured here above left.
I checked out the new spring summer collection of New Balance sneakers. I was also taken with the Chuck-like PF Flyer sneakers, a brand established in 1937 that New Balance acquired, then re-launched in 2003. It is pictured in a Japanese-designed two-tone grey wool and tan leather design below, as well as in coloured canvas.
Here are some of the highlights, below.
