First Thursdays – Second to none

‘First Thursdays’ held on Karangahape Road in a mix of venues was a fabulous evening, being able to cruise around the stalls, sip a wine here and there and people watch. What better way is there to spend a Thursday evening?

Last night was ‘First Thursdays’ held on Karangahape Road in a mix of venues throughout both St Kevin’s Arcade and the amazing Ironbank building.

First Thursdays was founded in December 2009 by Cleo Barnett, a native of Seattle. Cleo has brought to life this event in Auckland’s K Rd and it has proven to be very popular, drawing around 2000 art enthusiasts, music lovers, community leaders and creatives.

From 6-9pm on Thursday 3 March there was a hive of activity in K Road.

I started off my journey down St Kevin’s Arcade where I found a dozen or so art and craft stalls ranging from beautiful ceramics to handcrafted jewellery and lovely illustrations and prints.

Venturing back across K Rd through the award-winning Ironbank building…

…I arrived at $5 Indian curries, a prayer flag workshop and the sound of authentic bongo beats.

Further along this amazing architecture I arrived at Cross Street. I came across a cute vintage store aptly named ‘Tiny Space’ and it was here where a selection of vintage pieces were modeled later on that night.

If you are interested in contemporary yet fashionable yoga wear then get down to We-ar. They have some beautiful pieces and some sales items at great bargains; I found myself a nice thick hoodie for $10! (and thanks for the champagne, ladies).

Outside We-ar the tunes were pumping as there was a live broadcast by KFM. Right beside, the fumes of graffiti artist Askew One turned heads as he did a live show doing his thing on the side of a truck.

All in all I thought this was a fabulous evening, being able to cruise around the stalls, sip a wine here and there and people watch. What better way is there to spend a Thursday evening?

First Thursdays will be running again on 2nd June and 6th October so make sure you get this in your calendar. For more information see www.firstthursdays.co.nz
