We get the low down on the trends in glasses and hot tips on wearing specs in an interview with Gok Wan on his trip to NZ at Specsavers.
Turns out guys do make passes at girls – and guys – who wear glasses. You just have to know what to wear with the various styles of fashion…
"It’s been one of the strongest years in fashion for ten years cos we’ve come out a recession" Gok said.
Gok has just designed a collection of glasses frames which he says are "very rounded; late 60s, early 70s heavy perspex frames, quite heavy."
The biggest trend this spring on the European market, is hot summer brights in bright statement colours. Style this look with jewellery in bright, strong colours.
If wearing the minimalist look e.g. Marc Jacobs, you should keep glasses frames to tortoiseshells or pinks so you don’t overpower minimalist fashion.
With the structured fashion look, such as over-sized shoulders and peplum skirts, it can be tricky putting glasses with big, structured garments. Instead, metal titanium glasses work with oversized shoulders.
The surf girl is a hard trend – Gok says he absolutely HATES tie dye- to match with glases. You can balance it by using one key piece of tie dye.
With the over-embellishment trend (e.g. Gucci, Prada) add more – the more embellishment the better.
A HUGE trend has been the Moroccan bazaar, thanks to Sex and the City 2, with jewel colours; long, Grecian maxi dresses, sexy and beautiful. Keep glasses to earth tones or you’ll "like a manic gypsy" Gok says. "Stop at terracotta on a red or tortoiseshell on a brown."
For the sports luxe trend alaMarc Jacobs sportswear, be wary of looking horrendous like a scene from Fame. Go for formal tailoring but in sports fabrics. With glasess, use flesh tones, baby tones, or pinks.
We met with Gok and asked him our burning questions. Firstly, I asked what he’d consider a minimum glasses "start-up pack" that he’d recommende for different occasions.
"Just go for it!" Gok said. "If you’ve never worn heels, don’t go for kitten heels, bang on Louboutins. Fall over and get up again."
"Glasses have become as much a statement as the It bag."
For Megan (below right), Gok recommended squarer frames for my longer face shape, with rounded edged frames. For Rachel (below left), Gok said to wear black frames and to go wider, like Harold Lloyd!
