Goth, Glam, Boho or Dandy?

Whatever style tickles your fancy this winter there’s one from every decade from the 20’s to the 80’s, says Tracey Dalton, the woman in charge of TV3 hair, styling and make-up.

Dalton is clearly in the immaculately groomed camp herself, with her coiffured blonde locks and day sequins. Tres glam.

Let’s look at the must-have winter trends; many drawing references from decades past…

The key trends are Goth rock chick (1980s), modern simplicity and glamour (1940s), bohemian luxe (1970s), female dandy (1920s), lots of capes, chunky knits, and over the knee boots.

1. Goth rock chick (1980s)

Look out for studs, sequins, skinny pants, velvet textures in fabrics as well as leather, and ripped hosiery.

2. Modern simplicity and glamour (1940s)

Trend commentators are saying that the current recession heralds back to the 40’s recession and fashion follows (skirt) suit. Look for gloves, pearls, sexy stockings and red lips. Shapes are bell-skirts and ruffled shirts; the look of a 40s screen goddess.

3. Bohemian luxe (1970s)

Think exotic peasant and Russian cossack meets Marianne Faithful; velvets, fur and suede and layers of ethnic jewels and fringes on everything.

4. Female dandy (1920s)

Women dressing as men. Masculine meets feminine but cut to accentuate the female figure. Think Oscar Wilde meets Coco Chanel. This trend builds on the tuxedo and military trend of women wearing the pants, as well as waistcoats, bow blouses and high-waisted jodphurs.

5. Capes

Capes and capelets aren’t a replacement for winter coats but are a key trend this winter.

6. Chunky knits

Knits get BIG. Chunky poncho-style capes, and over-sized scarves abound.

7. Over the knee boots

Boots that rise above the knee work in well with various trends mentioned above particularly the 80s, the dandy, and the boho looks with fur and fringing detailing. Over the knee boots won’t work with the 1940s glam look though!

Evening Interpretations of the Trends

For cocktail and evening, sleeve and shoulder detailing is strong, especially on one shoulder looks, which remain this season from last. Pictured above, Armand Basi and Julian McDonald do the shoulder. The 80s look and the tuxedo is strong, all dandied up. Kneehigh boots with cocktail puff mini dresses were shown in several collections.
