Stolen Girlfriends Club Heavy Metal jewellery launch
On the back of a successful show at NZFW, Stolen Girlfriends Club are not resting on their laurels with the release of their edgy jewellery range, ‘Heavy Metal’. Rock and roll was the theme of the night, and was reflected in the presentation of their product, as well as the event itself.
I rolled down on my bike from the First Thursdays event not really knowing what to expect. With a seemingly endless supply of beers and Kim Crawford wine being consumed out of jam jars, the venue filled quickly.
The party was stoked by strains of the new Kanye West album, and The Naked and Famous’ ‘Young Blood’, New Zealand’s latest anthem to youth, and a tune fitting for the angle presented in SGC’s new jewellery line.
These two gentlemen are the Sweet Mix Kids, originally from Wellington, now kicking up a fuss in Auckland City. I first met them a week ago when they hosted a George FM party at my neighbours’ house in Parnell.
The jewellery itself was angular and Spartan, lending subtle hints of late 60s rock and roll. The customised vinyl left no doubt about the themes SGC have written into their range, and I’m sure many a ‘rock and roller’ will be sporting the ‘rings and things’ that are a part of this line.

The main event of the evening was the short film entitled ‘Don’t Be So Precious’. The promotional clip juxtaposed the awkwardness of courting with the unbridled passion of what happens thereafter. The soundtrack flipped from reserved density, to rage-filled metal, matching the onscreen action. It was all very wild.

Co-founders Marc Moore (pictured), Luke Harwood, and Dan Gosling are the talent behind SGC.
Marc was a genuinely friendly guy, and did not exhibit the surliness of many of the fashionistas that filled the venue on Thursday night. I am also led to believe they are surfers originally from Raglan and the Coromandel. Having been a local resident of both places throughout the years, my respect for these boys jumped markedly upon knowing this fact. The ocean is a creative place, its influence quietly reflected in the rise of SGC as a serious fashion contender. Fashion is art, but it is mostly a business. A lived knowledge of both is required to take fashion to the top of its own game.
These guys are doing just that. ‘Heavy Metal’ will be in stores mid-December.
