What better symbol to herald one’s arrival in the world of fine jewellery design than the herald itself?

Inspired by coats of arms and calling her debut collection "Heraldic Birds & Beasts", jewellery designer Emily Read’s designs for her label Larela have lions and swans mixing with mythical unicorns and mermaids in fine metals.

Thread loves the rearing unicorns, pictured left, and particularly likes the prominence of the hallmark on the shield. Heraldic necklace in solid 18 carat gold £3,200 and in sterling silver £235.

Larela is fashioned in solid sterling silver and solid 18 carat gold. Emily says her emphasis is on "traditional craftsmanship fused with youthful design."

Emily, based in Oxford, England, has been profiled in Vogue.com in August 2010 in Vogue’s gallery featuring new labels.

Emily spoke to Thread and said she "is the self-confessed biggest UK fan of the Flight of the Conchords", whom she went to see in May at Wembley. We’re sure she wore Larela to the gig!
