Turet Knuefermann Autumn/Winter 2011
In a country with a fondness for deconstructed shapes and casual layering, New Zealand designer Turet Knuefermann provides a sharp contrast.
Her European sensibility expresses itself in clean lines, sumptuous fabrics and impeccable cutting techniques. The relaxed tailoring of her jackets has seen her compared to Stella McCartney, while the sophisticated draping of her dresses brings to mind none other than fashion god Alber Elbaz of Lanvin.
These are bold statements, but ones that make perfect sense when you see Turet’s garments. At New Zealand Fashion Week, her A/W 2011 collection was applauded for its comfortable glamour.
“It had that X-factor,” said Jason Tapuai-Kuka for designerdirection.com. “Fur-lined and feather jackets added luxury to minimal but not simple tailoring… It made me think: here is a woman who knows how a woman wants to dress – empowering, sexy and confident.”
This neatly sums up Turet’s approach to design.
“In a recent interview, Stella McCartney said it’s important to make clothes that are extremely wearable, yet luxurious,” she says. “My philosophy is very similar. I cut to the silhouette of a woman’s body, and choose fabrics that fall to flatter her shape. Every piece is timeless and powerfully feminine.”
Stand out pieces include the easy leisure wear, exquisitely constructed evening gowns and a knee-length coat in fur trimmed wool. “This is a reimagining of the coat my father gave my mother when I was born. It has a 70s, “less is more” aesthetic, yet is still extremely opulent.”
For the first time, Turet has collaborated with American model Sierra Reed to design a complementary collection of jewellery and body harnesses. Inspired by the possibilities of personal connection and reinvention, this wearable art features daring combinations of lava rock, resin, agate, bolts, chains, Venetian glass and organic materials including leather, hemp and wools.
“The brand always refers back to the basics of every woman’s wardrobe, yet at the same time pushes fashion’s boundaries,” says Turet. “Now our customers can discover new ways of expressing themselves with these bold and extravagantly beautiful accessories.”
For winter, voluminous shapes are given a body-conscious fit, highlighting Turet’s impeccable draping techniques. Sumptuous silks, fine knits, faux furs and sequins reveal a powerfully feminine ideal.
"I usually sculpt directly onto the body and only sketch very roughly, if at all,” says Turet. “I’m fascinated by the impact that fabric can have when combined with a basic un-worked shape, the way it looks and moves and creates an understated sense of drama.”
