I’ve bought the worse house in the best street. Rather, field, in my case. Life has changed dramatically, swapping Workshop dresses, red painted nails, wedge brogues and former Devonport suburb for overalls and country air.
Alongside my Kiwi Husband, we’re renovating a 1920’s rural villa. I love a good deal (I’m a Scot) and my doer-upper villa was just that.
Naturally, renovations started in the master bedroom. I say naturally because bedroom interiors are my obsession. Healthy minds come from healthy sleeps. So I wanted a place that was clean and finished right from the start. A place to unwind.
Bedrooms should feel airy, simple and uncluttered. Light should be important, natural as well as artificial. Multiple lighting helps to set mood, from bright and energetic, to soothing or romantic.
Deep comfort from feather pillows, duvets, smelling candles, scent sticks, fresh flowers, electric blankets and rugs all create a luxurious retreat. However, the single most important aspect of a bedroom should be the bed itself. A bed should be centre stage. On that bed should be beautiful, crisp linen. When choosing bedding the saying is ‘you get what you pay for’. Sheets will make the difference in your sleeping experience.

It’s now kitchen renovation time for me and my villa. Rural life does open one up to interesting new styles. I thought Edinburgh was the only place where gumboots were chic. There seems to be a country code of compliance. Ute, check. Dog, check. Actually would anyone agree that a “swanny” was a rural New Zealand uniform…
