One to watch

I love a good watch. Unlike your handbag, it’s the one thing you wear all day – and unlike jewellery which you may change daily with your outfit, you wear a watch day in and day out.

A watch is an accessory that really speaks volumes about its wearer. Classic or contemporary, understated or eye-catching, it matches your personality.

I’m wearing this watch from Swedish watch company Daniel Wellington, who do interchangeable fashion straps so you can be sporty-preppy or more stylish-preppy, to suit your mood or your dress. This blue and white one (left) matches my tee and is called Classic Glasgow, and the red and blue one below is Classic Oxford – they’re all named for British places – and they also do brown leather straps. The clockwork is a Quartz Japan citizen 1L22 movement, and the diameter is 40 mm with a thin light watch measuring only 6 mm.

The brand is a fairly new company who says its aim to provide fashion conscious customers with slim, edgy wristwatches. They’ve been receiving fab reviews from bloggers and fashion magazines in Sweden and is about to expand their reach, launching Daniel Wellington in the US, New Zealand, Australia and the rest of Europe.

The story behind the brand is that founder Filip Tysander met an ex-British Army gentleman who wore his Rolexes on old weathered Nato straps from the army, and they named the brand after him: Daniel Wellington. Nato straps were designed to avoid rust and British navy divers wore the nylon straps over their wetsuits. Sean Connery wore a Nato strap in Bond film, ‘Dr No’.

Watches are priced around US$175 to $225 and additional Nato straps at $35 and leather straps at $65. For more info and to buy, see Daniel Wellington watches website at www.danielwellington.com
