In this designer profile we take another look at New Zealand label One & The Other, whom we covered one year ago on Thread, and see where young designers Isaac Gray and Oscar de Lautour are now. We found out about the changes, challenges and their future plans.
So, where do we find One & The Other now?
Over the past year our small time hobby has grown from a tee shirt label, to have a full collection from pants, shirts, jackets to even a few girls items on the horizon. Oscar is now in his second year of design at CPIT and I was successful in my job hunting efforts so now work part time as well as working with Oscar on One & The Other.
This time last year, we were up in an attic sewing pockets onto blank t shirts, staying up late ironing and preparing the limited number of tee shirts our hands (and mothers’ hands) could create. Now, one year on, we are still staying up late, but those nights consist of perfecting designs, researching trends and continuously updating our brand new website, and other forms of social media.
What’s been the biggest change?
For us, the biggest change from March last year has been our move to our website, and we can’t thank our close friend Will Vink for the effort and design inspiration he put in to it. Having a place to sell online has created a much more professional environment then how we use to sell on facebook.
Have you encountered any challenges along the way?
With the label growing, many hiccups have occurred but nothing too major. An unexpected one for us was going on holiday over summer and maybe leaving our summer release a tad late, but it is all things we have learnt from and planning ahead is something we now do!
What have you learned in the process?
Gaining a few stockists on the way has been a really cool experience, and opened up so many new relationships and has been a massive positive for us over the last year.
What are your future plans for One & The Other?
2013 will hopefully be a big year for us and our designs will come together to create our own look. We have just released our Autumn/Winter collection and it is available both online and in our selected stockists.
Hopefully the next year progresses nicely and we continue to work on everything we have planned to achieve.
