Race day fashion dos and don'ts

Hot trends are fuschia, colour blocking, flowers in hair and pro up-dos. There were also a few we WEREN’T happy seeing. The worst of the day was definitely the wearing of a nasty black bra under a BACKLESS dress…nasty, nasty, nasty…

Hot Trends

Fuschia
One of the wonderful things about Race Days is that you get to indulge in some colour. And boy did some women indulge!

Auckland can get a bit ‘black’ in its fashion (and I am a serial offender myself) at times. We saw some gorgeous multi-coloured dresses (especially Amber Peebles, who really pulled off wearing a strapless multi-coloured dress from a friend in London), but also some striking block colour dresses.

Our favourites were fushia and red. Fushia seemed to be the accessory colour of the day with jackets, hats, and shoes all being seen.

Flowers
A lovely alternative to the fascinators (which still have their place) and hats, was silk flowers seen everywhere in the hair worn side of head. They were also tucked into their hair ups of the day as well.

I think sometimes women are intimidated by hats, as there really is an art to choosing the right hat, for your face shape. Flowers in the hair get around that little problem quite nicely, and everyone can afford a few artifical flowers, especially when the budget can’t quite stretch to a good, well fitting and glamorous hat.

Up Dos
We were impressed to see so many women having had their hair professionally done; the extra effort is ALWAYS worth it. That and a good pedicure!

Well-dressed: Katie Cryer and Philipe Parker-Haismann.

Fashion no nos:
There were a few things that we really WEREN’T happy seeing.

Visible Lingerie
Strangely we saw far too much lingiere. We get that this is a wee fashion trend at the moment, but the back of your bra sticking out the back of your dress is not a pretty/classy look. I saw one beautiful vintage cream dress completely ruined by busted bra hooks sticking out the back. Not classy at all… we wouldn’t mention it – but it really was the theme of the day – and we can do better one imagines. The worst of the day was definitely the wearing of a nasty black bra under a BACKLESS dress…nasty, nasty, nasty…

Just Too Much Baby
A one shouldered, shorts, pantsuit. Three fabulous concepts in their own right, but all together in one outfit? The mind boggles… the races was definitely the wrong place for that particular outfit – and did I mention it was in black satin?

Sunburn
Sunburn marks when wearing a strapless dress – NO! If you have marks – then please wear a different dress, it just makes everything look cheap (again, not a look we are going for!)

Get It Together Blokes
And lastly – men, could you be any more boring? Really? White shirts and red/blue ties – if I see any more I think I will die. What about a nice trilby, or even a boater? A waistcoat or two? I saw one gent wear a lovely linen suit with tan brogues. Nice.
