At the Preloved Fashion Sale in Wellington for a total of $15 we managed to pick up a 1970’s tooled bag, a UK summer dress and a Thornton Hall silk vest with beading details. Tres vintage glamour; remember Gloss?
Preloved, recycled vintage, second hand and upcycling have been on the fashion radar for sometime especially since New Zealanders are conscious of the environment they live in and want to continue to enjoy this way of living.
So it was no surprise that the 6th annual Preloved Fashion Sale held in Wellington was patronised by a large number of keen shoppers (and a few gents too).
Thread.co.nz’s Cyndi and Ange (selflessly) took to the racks to see what was on offer…
Along with other shoppers we were greeted with a line of 50 others at the door. We recognised the same woman from last year at the head of the queue as she was last year, looking impeccably dressed.
Clothing and accessories were divided into styles from coats to dresses and everything in-between. This year there was a large designer section. Prices ranged from around $10 for a designer garment and for a total of $15 we managed to pick up a 1970’s tooled bag, a UK summer dress (both pictured) and a Thornton Hall silk vest with beading details. Tres vintage glamour; remember Gloss?
Garments were donated by locals for the sale and this year saw over $12,000 raised. Money is donated to the New Horizons for Women Trust, which provides second chance education awards for women, and to supporting refugee women through Wellington’s Change Makers Refugee Forum.
The event organiser, Sharon Cavanagh commented that “the sale was held in a bigger venue with cheaper price points this year in order to reflect the current economic climate”.
While we were a little concerned it was going to be a snatch, drop or grab affair, reminiscent of a David Jones sale, it was in fact a tidy, polite and friendly affair. Shoppers were quite low key and careful in their selection. What has happened to the fashionista? Have they calmed down?
This annual event aims to run next year too. Get lucky with a second time around fashion bargain – and give women a second chance.
