I have had a look at the Farmers Summer Collection called ‘Summer of Love’ and have come up with five great pieces for pretty much any budget that covers most of the major trends – florals, stripes, and the whimsical..
There is a train of thought, that ‘fashion’ or ‘style’ needs to look, or be, something very specific.
The older I get (and let’s not go there), the more I realise that these trends, and just that – trends, and are transitory. The key is always looking good, or right for your age, body shape and personality.
I have had some interesting conversations with my 13 year old, as she has begun to shape herself, and how she looks, about what ‘fashion’ is. She doesn’t want to particularly follow what other people are doing, though in her own way she is following ‘someone’ in her purple doc martens, skinny jeans, and vintage waistcoat she found in an op shop (which is what she was wearing yesterday). She already has a solid idea of what looks good on her, and what suits the way she lives – skateboarding, tree climbing, and skiing on the weekends.
It amazes me that so few people have a clear idea of what looks good on them. So they buy whatever is fashionable for that season, without caring whether it looks good on them or not.
Instead, what can we do? Always have good basics – and pay as much is reasonable for something that you wear nearly everyday. Then add some good, price- reasonable, well fitting ‘trend’ pieces.

The polka dot pants have been seen on some much more expensive catwalks already this summer – these will look great with some flat lace up and a blazer…
We have just been in London, and I saw a couple of versions of this jacket over there – nearly convinced my daughter to get one, but it was 32 degrees in London at the time – and jackets weren’t really on the shopping list… Whistles Striped Blazer $129.99
Flirty little skirt with bow detail at the front – will do for the weekend, or work… Ignite Poplin Stripe Bow Skirt $39.99
Soft pink Ignite Platinum Chiffon Trim tunic $49.99 – with a pair of ballet flats… or even over a pair of skinny jeans in the evenings…
My nod to florals – Ignite Platinum Strapless Printed Dress $39.99 – would look great with a hat and heels for the races, but just as cute on the weekends with ballet flats, tights and a little cardy. My daughter wants to wear it with a tshirt, jeans and Doc’s under it…
There you go – from the Races to something for the weekend, and reasonably priced to boot.
All pieces in store this summer at Farmers.
