The maxi dress seems like a bit of a staple. While on holiday in the US earlier this year I was rather shocked to see six British girls all in maxi dresses with, ahem, enhanced breasts, blingy gladiator sandals, fake tans and French manicures all…
It appears that Summer, in all its glory, has finally decided to bless us with her presence. And about time too! So now we get to start rumbling through our wardrobes to see what we want to wear from last year, or in my case, what I can still fit from last year – eeek!
The maxi dress seems like a bit of a staple. While on holiday in the US earlier this year I was rather shocked to see six British girls all in maxi dresses with, ahem, enhanced breasts, blingy gladiator sandals, fake tans and French manicures all get on a plane together heading back to the UK. It put me off maxi dresses on the spot but I have to say that there are such a wide variety available in good old NZ and we appear to not be wearing them in the euro trash style, that I may be tempted to own one to walk back from the beach. The Warehouse have a good range of them for all shapes and sizes – both in their Garage range, and their ‘hipper’ (does anyone say hipper any more?) larger size range – Maya.
Maya Maxi Dress Black $39.95.
Their new ‘Rachel Anywhere’ range is full of very simple basics – but sometimes it is hard to find just a good plain singlet top with enough extra length on it – and they have one in black and white. It is a simple basic to go under anything this summer.
They also have added a few extra styles to the Saben Says collection and the nude coloured work bag which is large enough to hold an extra pair of shoes if you are walking to work but nice enough, and on trend enough to be used on a day out. We like.
Overall the Maya range had good simple basics with touches of detailing with beading and ruffles such as the Maya Beaded Dress ($39.95) below.
The Garage range also has some great basics (strawberry singlet above left $19.95), but also a great skirt with a bit of the tribal going on, and a dress in the same fabric with a zip detail down the front.
Below: Garage denim jacket $39.95
Garage Striped Tee $24.99
The surprise of the day was the inclusion of the iconic MAMBO range. Angus Kingsmill, one of the new owners, was at the showing and enthusiastically talking about taking the company back to its irreverent graphic roots. The skate/surfwear company was bought out years ago and somehow ended up looking very ‘straight’ and PC. Not so much now as the new owners wish to return it to its graphic design beginnings.
Mambo History Board Shorts $39.99
The farting dog symbol is back to delight males of all ages. They also have surfboards, skateboards, wallets and watches to really fill the collection out. A definite sense of fun without breaking the bank. Other than the farting dog, our favourite was the kiss/Einstein t-shirt. There is a 13 year old girl in our house who is coverting the surfboard and as yet there are no price details on the boards but we imagine that they will be very price competitive. Perfect for those budding grommets.
