A definite highlight of the week – an indeed my year in the fashion calendar each year – is AUT’s fashion students graduation show, ROOKIE. Read more about it and see beautiful photos by James Yang here on Thread.
ROOKIE opened with a showcase of ZAMBESI Bachelor of Design (BDes Fashion Year 2) Industry Project garments (pictured above). Liz and Dane from Zambesi worked with the second year students on these garments, which were striking. If you’ve got AUT and ZAMBESI together, you’ve basically got the A to Z of New Zealand fashion right there, bam.
It was held again in Shed 10 on the waterfront and was a mixed bunch. But the ones that were good, were very, very good. Some of the collections I particularly liked included Anne Hollister-Jones, Chelsea Thomas (pictured below), Katelyn Nelson, Brit Day, Courtney Perham, Caroline Stephen, and Jarrad Godman.
Modes were from Unique Model Management, Vanity Walk, and Red Eleven agencies, hair by D&M led by Danny Pato, makeup by students of Cut Above Academy.
Several have been picked up by Showroom 22 to display in their fashion showroom.
My overall favourite was Ian Bernhardt, with sweeping maxi dresses teamed with vintage reworked furs, below.

Here are some of my picks from the AUT graduate collections in the adjoining showcase. The showroom was beautifully designed by Victoria Cooper Smith.

More great colours and a ballet-perfect pink tutu dress.
These abstract painterly-designed knits were a stand-out to me.
And my favourite thing in the AUT ROOKIE showcase, these tree printed designs on garments and accessories – stunning.
