Year in review: Best of 2012

It’s that time of year to do a retrospective look back at the past twelve months.

Here we take a glance at the parties, shows and events that Thread.co.nz attended throughout 2012. Click on the links to take you through to the original articles, all on Thread.co.nz

What will we miss? New Zealand’s Next Top Model, and NZ Fashion Festival. We’re looking forward to Industry (the re-named Hair X event), iD Dunedin, and NZ Fashion Week – as well as many more things I don’t even know about as yet.

January

Off to a great start when we reported on street style at Parachute festival.

February

Model casting for NZ Fashion Festival

Thread went to New York Fashion Week with Melissa Chrisp reporting backstage thanks to M.A.C.

We sipped Veuve Clicquot at the BMW Polo down at Clevedon.

I (somehow) won the Big Little City ‘Editor’s Shopping Challenge‘ that had fashion editors running around town with a shopping budget to put an outfit together and be judged by Colin Mathura-Jeffree. So much fun.

The highlight of the Fashion Festival was the MAC make-up seminars http://www.thread.co.nz/news/6333/15/M-A-C-Femme-to-Feline

March

Urbis Designday is always a hit. Below: Megan from Thread with Francis Hooper from World who welcomed everyone into Design55 dressed in a panda suit.

WORLD, Kate Sylvester and Zambesi launched their move from High Street to Britomart Precinct with a bang with a catwalk show.

Kimbra played live at Derby Day at Ellerslie, at TV3 Carnival.

I flew to Dunedin to attend the iD International Emerging Designer Awards which was not only visually stunning and extremely creative, it was incredibly smoothly run and professional.

April

Juliette Hogan presented ‘Yacht Rockers’, her summer 2012 collection of soft, fluid resort wear separates – styled with visors, ankle socks and plimsolls – at the Blue Sky catwalk show in Australis House on 24th April. http://www.thread.co.nz/news/6462/15/Yacht-rocking-beats

Auckland turned on the rain but we were greeted with flowers, champagne and smiles as Thread attended the Tahitian-themed launch of Moët & Chandon and Tourism Tahiti at Soul Bar at the Viaduct on 11th April.

The Friday night show at the inaugural Wellington Fashion Week turned up the heat and so did the fashion lovers attending.

The Department Store’s ‘In Conversation’ panel discussion on Thursday 26th April, featured Escentric Molecules‘ Jeff Lounds and his partner, Style.com’s Tim Blanks, hosted by Karen Walker.

Thread toe-tapped along at the opening night of Jersey Boys at the Civic

May

I went along to hear Wallpaper Creative Director Meirion Pritchard at a panel presented by ACP Media Present Publishing on Experimental Photography & Art Direction
at Auckland Museum Auditorium on 17 May.

Julie Roulston brought Thread the top trends from Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia 2012, including coloured hair, texture, creativity on nails, bomber jackets, cut-outs, peplums, sportswear, and florals.

Stolen Girlfriends Club‘s Dan Gosling and Marc Moore spoke at Day Two of Semi-Permanent in Auckland on Saturday 19th May.

June

moochi, Zambesi, Jimmy D and Taylor presented in-season at the ‘Backstage with Snowden Hill’ Fashion Show at Hair X hair expo held at Hilton Auckland on 2 June.

Karen Walker – an ambassador for Lexus- showed her AW12 collection in a runway show at Lexus Auckland.

July

We love both women and wine so having them combined is pretty amazing. 3rd July saw the second annual Women in Wine luncheon at The Longroom in Ponsonby, where leading women in New Zealand wine (below: Jules Taylor) shared their stories at the fundraiser for Variety, The Children’s Charity.

We travelled to Queenstown and reviewed the spa Comfort Zone at Millbrook, and it was cold outside but HOT inside, as Kathryn Wilson revealed her new swimwear range alongside the new summer 2012 footwear collection, at a catwalk show at Queenstown Hilton at Clicquot in the Snow.

August

Zambesi launched its Zambesi Eyewear collection at Australis House with an installation of sheet-wrapped models in perhaps the world’s most stylish toga party.

Thread was a lucky driver of Dmonic Intent-designed BMW, one of the four ‘Ultimate Style Icons’ with NZ Fashion Week New Generation designers creating wraps on four BMW X1s.

In a sometimes rather drab outside world, the spectacularly fabulous WORLD brought its aptly-titled catwalk show ‘A Night of Luxury‘ to a packed house of its fans with a glamorous evening at the Langham Auckland on Wednesday, 22 August.

September

Immediately prior to New Zealand Fashion Week, Stephen Marr and Hallertau put on an incredible week of pre-fashion week shows at Ponsonby bar Golden Dawn featuring the labels Helen Cherry and Workshop, Kate Sylvester, Zambesi, Nom.d, and Karen Walker.

Fashion Week was the biggie this month and we loaded forty articles on it – too many to list here – but here’s one day at NZFW in review.

Ronald McDonald House Auckland’s ambassador for Fashion Week, Kathryn Wilson, had her shoes walk the runway for charity at Saturday’s Designer Selection Show for RMHA’s Night of Fashion hosted by Sara Tetro.

Fashion media got to drive fast cars fast at the Luxury Laps event with BMW at Hampton Downs race track on 27th September, along with Olympian Lisa Carrington (below left).

Summer Daze was our summer fashion story shot by Reema Alfouir for thread.co.nz using vintage and fashion from Wellington stores.

I had my first snowboarding lessons at Ruapehu with the popular Ladies Weeks at Mt Ruapehu run in association with Icebreaker and Morton Estate wines.

October

The 2012 Brancott Estate World of WearableArt Awards ‘WOW’ Show was definitely one of the top events on the arts calendar in New Zealand not only for the entries, but the spectacle of the show itself – and I was torn often between watching the entries in the awards and the backdrop of the dancers performing during it.

Karen Walker personally hosted a fun school holiday children’s craft morning making peg dolls using her current season SS12 Karen Walker fabric, at The Department Store in Takapuna.

Mary Poppins the musical premiered at the Civic in Auckland on 18th October – fittingly on a warm but windy Auckland night – with a gala opening that saw guests walk the red carpet down Queen Street.

M.A.C Cosmetics held the party of the week, Hit the Pavement, at Australis House in Britomart on Thursday 25th October with street food and margaritas amongst bodypainted living statues.

November

Amber Whitecliffe and swimwear designer Emma Highfield showed their Summer 2013 collections at a show in Mt Eden Bowling Club over High Tea on 4th November.

Akira Isogawa showed his first individual catwalk show in New Zealand, alongside a showcase of his colab with Designer Rugs at a stunning event at The Nathan Club on Wednesday 7th November in association with Rolls Royce.

December

Beauty media took to the skies for a trip via helicopter to Cable Bay winery on Waiheke Island with BDM Grange and Bio-Oil.

Thanks for reading Thread. See you next year!
