You may recall us covering a new fashion label Hearts Like Ours on Thread in December last year, born out of some coins found down the back of a couch and sewn from op shop men’s suits.
Now, Auckland label Hearts Like Ours is a fully-fledged up-and-coming label into its third season, with a website, a lookbook and even a very well-produced fashion video to boot.
The video was shot by Claire Littler, assisted by Danelle Bohane, and styled by co-designer Brad Dellar. The hair and make-up was by Melissa King for Stephen Marr assisted by Christina Houghton. The models were Sophie Blazey and Harrison Burt from Clyne, and Melanie Cutfield, and owner/designer Ben Simmen also appears in a few shots.
We are impressed.
Here’s what Olivia Boswell says about their Spring/Summer 2010/11 collection, "The days are old."
"This summer Hearts Like Ours explores the world of passers-by with ‘The days are old’, inspired by old men and uniformed school children alike.
The collection tells of days when trips to the seaside were an event, when well-groomed ladies and gents strolled down boardwalks and when sprightly young things wore their Sunday best, every day.
Impeccably tailored shirts and trousers reminiscent of those days gone by are updated with flashes of floral lining, paper-bag waistlines, sheer silks and a more fitted leg for the fellows.
A laugh, a smile, a tip of the hat and top of the morning to you leads the collection into a dockside style double-breasted cardigan and pale blue shirt. Add the school boy shorts and you have an outfit perfect for a day out on the water’s edge, inner city sidewalk or anywhere else for that matter. The long-sleeve cream t-shirt dress and grey-blue jumpsuit are just what the doctor ordered for young lasses on those lazy weekends, lounging around in the sun.
Touches of lipstick red, in the form of a belt or headscarf, add to the muted palate of mainly neutral, earthy and pastel tones.
The garments are tied together with unexpected details – accents of the Lola and Ziggy shirt patterns showing up on cuffs, lining and pocket inners -design fine points which often get lost in the typical fast-paced approach to churning out trends and fads.
These garments are for style seekers who value made in New Zealand high-calibre tailoring with a modern edge, and aren’t afraid to show it. Time passes, but quality lasts forever."
