My latest must-see movie: Chef. I give it 8/10, and this film is out this week on IGLOO from 26th September so you can watch it from your couch…whilst eating!
Make lemonade
Much as I feel the classic line: “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade” is a touch corny, that’s exactly what sums up this film. When life deals some bad hands (read: he makes some terrible decisions, and then Tweets them) to chef Casper (Jon Favreau), he managed to turn it around by following his dream and opening a food truck. Along the way, he becomes closer to his young son Percy, and they teach each other about cooking and social media.
Social media
Speaking of which, I particularly enjoyed the social media component of the film. I’m a big user of Twitter, so I relished (food pun) the online interaction; firstly with chef as a Twitter noob, thinking his Tweets were private and his surprise when his insults to a mean food critic went live and viral, through to the success in publicising the food truck via their followers, thanks to his social media manager, his son.
We’ve all worked for a Dustin Hoffman type
The restaurant owner, played superbly by Dustin Hoffman, is a nasty guy. He is all about the money, and fair enough as he is running a business, but he’s not losing any charm on chef who wants to desperately try out different food and be creative once more. I’m sure we’ve all worked for a manager like this, so I could really relate. Off for the greener pastures of self-employment goes our friend.
Food, glorious food
If you love shots of food, I recommend you see The 100 Foot Journey. If you love people enjoying their food, you’ll love Chef.
Get it while it’s hot
They source Latino delicacies via his ex-wife and mother of his son, and her ex-husband provides the food truck, and they are on their way across the country with Facebook updates and Tweets alerting customers where to come and queue for amazing hot food.
