Otago Polytechnic Fashion Graduate Collections

Thread checked out the Otago Polytechnic Collections 14 show last Friday evening. Garments made by Design students enrolled in the Bachelor of Design (Fashion) and Graduate Diploma were showcased before an excited, packed audience.

First up were works by students from Shanghai University of Engineering Science as part of a Shanghai Dunedin sister city project. A highlight for me was the futuristic look of garments by Xia LiYan.

Next up were year one and year two students. I really liked the use of loom bands attached into a garment (pictured) They have been so popular in 2014.

Year 2 students had collaborative collections with local fashion labels such as VOID, Slick Willy’s, Plume, Senorita Awesumo, Charmaine Reveley and Belle Bird. Senorita Awesumo aka Fiona Clements is a sustainable fashion practitioner who practices one of Otago Polytechnics values of sustainability. Students given the opportunity to collaborate with her have learned the theory of imparting sustainable fashion principles within their courses and seen it in practice in the Dunedin fashion community.

During the break it was great to see work by design students majoring in Interiors, Communication and Product Design on display as part of DE/BRIEF. There was even a pop-up-shop if you wanted to purchase off the students and take their products home. I was eyeing up a beautiful green coat and skirt on display but sadly it was not for sale!

Part 2 was for the graduates and all students showed off a culmination of 3 years worth of talent and knowledge. I loved Sally McCCance’s leather work and a very sparkly dress by Charlotte Chambers (pictured below).

Well done to Caroline Terpstra, Head of School; Margot Barton, Academic Leader Fashion; all Design staff; and the talented students for your tireless enthusiasm to make Collections 14 a stand out event of the Excite Student Showcase 2014.
