Ari Seth Cohen of Advanced Style has released an incredible doco starring some of the women who star in his photography on his Advanced Style blog of stylish older women, in their 70s, 80s, and 90s. The film opens on Thursday the 4th of December in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington & Dunedin with Christchurch opening on the 11th of December.
Sarah McMullan has this to say about the film.
“It really looks at the women and what the blog and book has done for them specifically; and how their age and sense of style sits in today’s world. It tackles the idea of age and what that means to a woman – physically and emotionally.
Considering the success of Hip Hop-eration and films like My Old Lady; a perceived rise in feminist thought and sensibilities, it’s interesting to look at this film from a couple of viewpoints.
One: An older population means that content concerning older people is starting to be more important and of more interest. In Japan they sell more adult diapers than nappies for babies.
Two: Senior does not mean old. These women may be over 60. (Or 70) but they’re certainly not old ladies.
Three: There’s such a return in interest of vintage, retro and classic styling. These women lived it and effortlessly plunder their wardrobes for past items that younger generations are in awe of.
Four: Who ARE our modern style icons? Many in the public eye are dressed by professionals. These women dress for themselves. Style is something you earn through living and these women have lived some amazing lives if their outfits are anything to go by!”
