Film review: Disney’s Big Hero 6

We headed along to Disney’s Big Hero 6 on 7th December at Sylvia Park at the media screening session. The kids loved it and it was entertaining for us parents, too. It’s a massive movie that almost covers 10 comic books in one movie. Whilst the poster tagline states it’s from the creators of big hit films Wreck it Ralph and Frozen, Big Hero 6 was darker and more emotional than either of those so best aimed at slightly older children, teens, and adults.

Short film – Disney’s ‘Feast’

Disney’s ‘Feast’ premieres before Big Hero 6 in 3D on Boxing Day 2014. Feast is a new short from first-time Director Patrick Osborne. Any film that focuses its plot around food is a favourite with me. It drew me in right from the start. Winston is a gorgeous puppy taken home by James and fed lots of treats of junk food which he loves. The story is told through Winston’s point of view, literally – the film is shot from at Winston’s eye height which is a really interesting change. Spoiler alert: it ends with a glorious amount of cupcakes flying into the air towards Winston’s waiting open mouth! Lucky dog.

Disney new animated film – Big Hero 6

The main act ‘Big Hero 6’ was even more heart-warming. Walt Disney Animation Studios, the team behind ‘Frozen’ and ‘Wreck-It Ralph’, have created a comedy adventure about the special relationship between Baymax (Scott Adsit), an inflatable robot, and a 14 year old robotic prodigy, Hiro Hamada (Ryan Potter).

After tragedy strikes, Hiro, with the support of Baymax, forms a superhero team of tech-nerds to defeat a masked villain.

Resist the urge to get up and leave as soon as the credits roll. The post credit scene featuring Stan Lee, is a treat.

I suggest this is a film best suited to kids older than 6 or 7 years old, as I noticed a few younger children leaving the cinema halfway through when the action really kicked in. Older kids can better appreciate the rollercoaster of emotions the movie takes you on. They loved it, and were repeating Baymax’s line “we jumped out a window” all afternoon.

I recommend seeing this in 3D, you don’t want to miss out on the action coming right at you. Big Hero 6 opens on Boxing Day and I’ll be first in line to see it again.
