Comedy for charity with THE GOOD GUYS

THE GOOD GUYS The Good Guys Sunday 10 May @ 7pm @ The Tuning Fork

Call me old-fashioned, but when I go to a show I like to be comfortable and enjoy myself. I want to be able to drive, park, stroll to the venue, sit down, and lose myself in the experience of the evening. “The Good Guys” show at The Tuning Fork by Vector Arena on Sunday 10 May promised to be one of those sorts of shows. It was comedy, in a bar, with several well-known New Zealand comedians, and, best of all, it was a charity gala: it was all to raise funds for the victims of those dreadful earthquakes in Nepal. I was looking forward to it immensely.

Now, I’ll admit, it wasn’t the fault of the organisers of The Good Guys that I couldn’t find the venue and arrived late (although five minutes after kick-off is probably alright, and it meant we only missed the first few minutes of host Jeremy Ellwood’s monologue). However, if you’re going to have a seated show, then for God’s sake have sufficient seats for the number of people attending.

Host Jeremy Ellwood did a good turn, and first act Steve Wrigley really got things going. He managed this admirably, despite having a thumping cold in the head – indeed, as soon as his set was done, he was off home to bed. The next act, James Nokise, got a few laughs, although I found his jokes a bit tired. The final act of the first half, Dai Henwood, was his normal and effusive self – sharp, clever, and insightful. We would have loved to have stayed for the second half (Urzila Carlson and Ben Hurley), but with no sign of seat (neither chair nor stool nor beanbag), we wandered off to do battle with the Spandau Ballet crowd and the parking meters in the Britomart building.
