NZ Fashion Museum

The fabulous New Zealand Fashion Museum’s latest (and largest) exhibition, At the Beach, celebrates 10 years of summer fashion. See the changing looks over the decades of beach wear of New Zealanders, with this showcase of garments on to the public at the Maritime Museum on Auckland’s waterfront. There are also some noteworthy inclusions for fashionistas including the first garment Stolen Girlfriends, Marc Moore ever designed, as well as some swimwear pin-ups of our own 1980s supermodels, Rachel Hunter and Lorraine Downes. A 2008 Zambesi dress inspired by 1950s swimsuit shows the close parallels.   This Glamour Beach section also includes a a 1950s satin swimsuit that is rumoured to have ‘taken a dip’ with the Duke of Edinburgh on the Royal Tour of 1953-54.

Sera Lilly Curve

You may remember back in May on Thread we shared about the model search for plus-size models for the Sera Lilly Curve label designed by the former bridal designer and retailer, and backed by famous New Zealand fashion brand Pagani. Well, good news, as after that relationship ended Sera Lilly is still producing the collection, under the same name – Sera Lilly Curve – AND the gorgeous SS 15/16 collection is now on their website. “I’m a firm believer that every woman can look good – and in fact deserves to look good no matter what her shape or size” – Sera Lilly. The range is for NZ sizes 14 to 24, with dresses around the $80 – $120 range, and will be available online at www.seralillycurve.com

Graduate Fashion Shows

It is that time of year again when fashion school students show their graduate collections, the best-slash-luckiest of whom get picked up to either produce their own ranges, or work for an existing label. You always see fashion designers sitting in the front row making notes as models walk out in various designs – their faces are a treat to watch. There are graduate shows from each institute but we are invited to Massey Uni Wellington, Whitecliffe at The Viaduct Events Centre – the same venue as NZ Fashion Week – and AUT ‘Rookie’. Whitecliffe Fashion Design says their students “think creatively, take risks, and are innovators with a personal vision. This much anticipated annual event where Years 2, 3 and 4 Fashion Design students showcase their collections is your opportunity to share in that vision and to see first-hand, the perspective taken by emerging designers.”
