If you love second-hand items half as much as I do, you will love this. For just one week from today, the legendary Auckland second-hand store Junk & Disorderly, along with Xero, has a pop-up gallery in Ponsonby with some fascinating pieces from New Zealand lives and business of the past, from a pharmacy scale to shop signs and even a farming tool we thought was a face mask! The signs on each item are incredibly interesting, and give you insight onto these pieces that are museum artefacts of the future.
I have pieces from the iconic Northcote store in my own home, so I was so excited to learn about the pop-up gallery on this week and I headed in today. You should definitely come in this week and see it.
There’s even a pinball game for those with a nostalgic desire to play a game, and an old bike – but sorry, you can’t ride it. The 33 sqm space in Ponsonby Central is transformed into a gallery space of the weird and wonderful from times gone for collectors of the modern era.

I enjoyed a chat with the founders of Junk & Disorderly, Nicole and Richard, who are clearly very passionate about their work as well as having a keen eye for finding the value in the junk. As the saying goes, one man’s junk is another man’s treasure. They told me how they get calls to go through people’s homes, and estates, and it’s often quite emotional, as they discover a life’s collections and they personally sort through and find countless treasures. They are also very fashion savvy – Nicole was wearing a dress by NZ designer Jason Lingard from the pop-up next door at Ponsonby Central – and I shared my personal love of old sewing machines and they told me about the booklets you can get that show how people paid off their sewing machine purchases and Nicole took my email in case she finds a photo of one. So thoughtful!

The gallery is open from 19-25 Feb at Ponsonby Central at 136 Ponsonby Road, Auckland. It is free and open to the public, so come along and check it out!
