Art, Food, and Fashion in Melbourne in February 2020
COLLECTING COMME at NGV
First thing I do in Melbourne and already my heart is full of joy- seeing an exhibition of one of my favourite designers, Rei Kawakubo of Comme Des Garcons exhibition at NGV.

I happened across their excellent and free of charge guided tours, and it was incredibly informative and interesting, so I definitely recommend doing a guided tour. I told the guide that Rihanna wore a Rei Kawakubo dress at Met Gala, and she said thanks she’s adding that in to her talk 🙂

Rei Kawakubo has just influenced the fashion industry for half a century and we wouldn’t have so many other designers without her. Such a talent, and always pushing the boundaries of body-to-garment. Rei says, “I don’t design for women to look pretty for men.”

Get along to the Collecting Comme exhibition at National Gallery of Victoria if you can, with over a hundred pieces collected by one Comme superfan, I’ve never seen a retrospective like it.

JAPANESE MODERNISM AT NGV
Some highlights from the Japanese Modernism exhibition I enjoyed very much at the NGV gallery exhibition today.

Harry Potter Wizarding World

Under MYER department store in Melbourne is another world- where you can dress up as a wizard and catch the Hogwarts Express at Harry Potter Wizarding World. The floor is part shop, part Instagram-paradise where shoppers can don hats and cloaks (free of charge) and take photos pushing the luggage trolley through the brick station wall at Platform 9 3/4, sit on a LEGO throne with a Lego Hermoine and Harry, see a model flying car, and view the wands of all wizards available for sale. Great for kids of all ages and new and old Harry Potter fans.

Around Melbourne

Beautiful Melbourne Botanical Gardens is an ideal place to walk and unwind. I visited the war memorial, Shrine of Remembrance, which was built to honour the men and women of Victoria who served in World War I, but now functions as a memorial to all Australians who have served in any war. It is a massive building set atop giant stone steps, and is open free to the public. Walk the the doors to view the open roof through which light falls as a recording of a bugle plays taps on the hour.

I took the opportunity to visit a fashion showroom and view the new season collections while in Melbourne. How cute are the bee rings at Olivia Burton London?

Coffee catch up with my gorgeous fashion writer @reema_alfouir who now lives in Melbourne. I can see why she loves this city.

Thinking about all the pizza shops I saw today that I need to eat at. Pic by @reema_alfouir in Lygon, Melbourne.

Loving Melbourne, (took ages to find a lane without any graffiti on it though) <laughing emoji> Photo by the Instagram Husband.
