The New Classics – From Day to Night

Whether you’ve been indoors eating toast and cups of tea like me, or outside dressed up with somewhere to go, you’ll want to look and feel your best. It’s easy to do this, if you have some classic pieces in your wardrobe that you can go to in a flash and know how to style to look great without too much fuss. That’s what’s so good about the classics; you just know you can rely on them – a bodysuit, a patterned top, a little white dress, or a checked shirt – to take you anywhere. In this latest column, I look at how to wear The New Classics – in four easy to style looks that go from day to night.

DAY WEAR

THE NEW MUST-HAVE ITEM: THE SHACKET

THE NEW MUST-HAVE ITEM: THE SHACKET
A shacket gives you a dressy casual look that’s ideal for relaxing at home or going for walks.

Here I’ve styled the new must-have piece, the shacket – or shirt jacket – over the black catsuit and changed the high heels for flat shoes for an easy-to-wear dressy casual look that’s ideal for relaxing at home or going for walks. The shacket is lighter than a jacket or coat, making it perfect for in-between seasons or indoor wear and is very soft and really comfortable. These colours go well with denim in blue or black, or black pants, or denim shorts and skirts.

THE DAYWEAR GO ANYWHERE PIECE: THE PATTERNED TOP

THE DAYWEAR GO ANYWHERE PIECE: THE PATTERNED TOP
Worn on the shoulder or off, this patterned top is so versatile.
Blue floral puff sleeve Lovelyn Top

I love a pretty, patterned top, especially in florals. After all, what’s better for Spring than florals? The awesomest thing about this top – and let’s face it, it’s already pretty awesome – is how versatile it is. You can put the shoulders up to wear it on your shoulders and wear a bra with it, or wear it pulled down as a strapless top. But wait, there’s more! You can gather up the front to make it a crop top with a ruched front, or pull the ties out to make it full length. In this way, it can go from wholesome and sweet to hot girl summer in seconds. I especially like its puff sleeve with elasticated cuffs, which you can wear full length at your wrists, or pulled up to the elbow and ballooned out.

…AND WE MOVE TO THE NIGHT

THE CLASSIC ESSENTIAL: THE BODYSUIT

THE CLASSIC ESSENTIAL: THE BODYSUIT
Black longsleeve high neck Marisa Jumpsuit
The jumpsuit is one of the most enduring and endearing fashion classics.

With nostalgic notes of Diana Rigg in the Sixties iconic show, The Avengers, a black catsuit or full length bodysuit is a one piece wonder that will transform into anything you desire with how you accessorise it. Here, I wear the high necked black bodysuit with strappy black high heel sandals, a simple leather belt to highlight the waist and black cats eye sunglasses to complement the 1960s theme. It’s so useful for wearing under sheer garments as a layering piece, with a kaftan or kimono, and under a blazer or suit jacket. The jumpsuit is one of the most enduring and endearing fashion classics.

THE ETERNALLY CHIC PIECE: THE WHITE DRESS

THE ETERNALLY CHIC PIECE: THE WHITE DRESS
A LWD – little white dress.
The perfectly elegant midi length.
A classic fashion staple known for its simple elegance and class.

A LWD – little white dress– is immortalised in films and on the red carpet as a classic fashion staple for its simple elegance and class. It brings up images in the mind of Monroe, Hepburn, and Grace Kelly. When you wear a LWD you instantly feel 100% more chic I think! Here, I have accessorised the white cowl neck ruched midi dress with a metallic strappy high heel sandal, modern bangle, and leather earring, and hair pulled back for a timeless look. How will you style yours?
