Trendwatch: What is the Midriff Flossing trend, and where to buy the new look

Image above: midriff flossing looks from various designers and celebrities.

If you saw the SS21 runway shows, you will have spotted a key trend of tiny ties criss-crossing the waist. This trend was seen on skirts, on dresses cut in two exposing the stomach and sides of the hips, and in swimwear, evoking nightmare tan lines images in my mind. It has since left the runways and moved from the catwalk onto the sidewalk with celebrities and actresses popularising it for its sexiness, bringing the trend into the high street stores this current season. In this Trendwatch column, we take a look at what is the midriff flossing trend and where to buy the new look at a variety of price points.

Karen Millen crisscross bust dress

The Karen Millen black dress above has a more subtle approach to midriff flossing for those dipping their toes in and not wanting to expose large swathes of flesh; just cut out holes give a peekaboo look and a criss cross tie at the bust going around the back of the neck.

Jacket by Nasty Gal x Emma Louise Connolly

Nasty Gal has teamed for a collab with model Emma Louise Connolly in a collection that includes this cropped jacket with elasticated waist and waist strap.

Nasty Gal printed dress

Also from Nasty Gal comes this oil on water printed dress with pull up side seams and a midriff-baring front. With a high neck and longsleeve, this puts all the focus on the midriff.

Boohoo x Madison Beer co-ord

More of a party or festival look from Boohoo x Madison Beer, in this Satin Strappy Top & Ruched Skirt Co-Ord with pull up skirt ruching and a bra top with crisscross ties.

Glassons Silky Side Tie Cami

This Silky Side Tie Cami from Glassons bares the midriff with a side crisscross tie in a bow, perfect for summer.

Lastly, a DIY option for those who want to get crafty and create their own midriff flossing look. Start with a cropped tank top such as this Joah Brown square neck tank from Superette, and add 1 metre of ribbon to the side hems and cross in the front then tie in a bow at the back.
