Scandinavian Sleeping
Tug o’ war in the middle of the night? Woken up to find your partner rolled in the duvet and left you cold with only a small corner? Had to perform a lawnmower start move with the covers to get some back? Well the Scandinavians have the solution, two single duvet covers on one bed.
I came across this sleeping arrangement on a recent trip to Stockholm. This style is not just limited to Sweden. Germany, as well as Austria follow suit as well as some other European countries. More times that not, if you were staying in hotels in Sweden and Denmark you would sleep with two single duvets. Although to allow for the discerning tourist some single duvets may be linked with clips.
Two single duvets are laid down vertically side by side on the bed. Generally no top (flat) sheet exists. Sometimes a throw or blanket is put over the top to tide the look.
As a personal rule a super king sized duvet habitually finds itself over a king sized bed. This assembly tends to deter the midnight wiggles. Up until now that is. Recently my Husband and I decided to give the Scandinavian style sleeping arrangements a try, with two small children a full nights sleep has a whole new level of appeal.
Online purchasing was a breeze on at Briscoes (briscoes.co.nz). Delivery was speedy and the purchase was straight forward and hassle free from the comfort of my office. I bought Snuggledown Duvets with 5% goose down and 95% feather, costing $119.00 each. Down is a layer of feathers found under the tougher exterior feathers. They have a more intricate structure than the exterior feathers therefore giving a higher thermal insulation level. The general rule to purchasing feather duvets is that the higher the down the warmer the product will be. Due to the changing warmer weather I choose a higher feather ratio to down to allow for cool nights. In Autumn I will change again to a 60 / 40 ratio of down to feathers.
So far my Husband and I have found our new single covers wonderful. We can roll up in our own duvets and not wake one an other. In 2012 all Scandinavian countries made the top 10 happiest countries in the world. My guess to the reason behind this is that the average person gets a great nights sleep. Why not give the single duvet sleeping a go? It might change your life.
