Every year, there is a word I take away from Semi Permanent.
Last year it was determination, the year before collaboration, but this year, it’s not really a word but an emotion. The day 2 speakers showed work from their heart, and the truly memorable ones spoke from it.
Yesterday, we witnessed the best presentation in Semi Permanent Auckland history. Nat Cheshire melted our hearts with a poetic presentation melding his and our city’s history that left me in tears. Every line he spoke was something to remember and people around me were furiously scribbling notes. I was mesmerised with the calmness of his stage presence, the images of a city changed from 100 years of accumulated beige, and his steely gritty determination to choreograph the decay and build his vision.
He has set a new benchmark expectation for presentations, an intimate story, incredible work work and heart makes for the perfect presentation.
I loved the Niki Caro interview with a friend which made it feel like we were sneakily listening in to an intimate conversation at a party. Her work is beautiful and the scene from Whale Rider left hardly a dry eye in the house.
Daito Manabe, turned the release of Japanese band Perfume song upside down. Generously giving out the choreography in motion capture tracking form, fans could animate it before they saw the real version of the band dancing on tour.
Frameworks’ stunning, almost overwhelming show reels that demonstrated they are world leaders and ground breakers. I enjoyed the behind the scenes details from Gravity.
We were treated to a hilarious presentation from Taika Waititi inviting designers to create a poster for his and Jemaine Clement’s new movie, Delicious Necks. You can get the images and enter the poster competition by emailing deliciousnecks@gmail.com.
You gotta end well and Mike Mizrahi did that. For someone one who never settles for mediocrity he delivered a spectacular end to the 2014 conference.
Thanks to Simon, Te Radar and the amazing crew for yet another incredible conference.
The gems I’ll take away from day two: say yes, do all you can to make your work meaningful, however small the job is, and always create it from your heart.
– By Rebecca Zwitser
Niki Caro – With Whale Rider, nothing gets in the way of the story. Pai wants approval of her grandfather. I wanted approval of Maori. “I often arrive on set and I’m mistaken for the makeup artist” Director Niki Caro on being a female Director in films.
Nat Cheshire – “”We created two houses based on an old Chinese teapot in the country that had everything but fucking indoor outdoor flow.” “If you know your cliff edge, you can use all the space leading up to it, all of the time.” “All of a sudden Auckland looked really, really hungry. It was like we’d opened a door in a blank wall.” “Reverse immigration has given Auckland denizens who want the sophistication of the world cities they’ve left behind.” “Grown women drank and fought and fucked and vomited all over our building – it’s all we could hope for.” “In the meantime we’re going to build and build. Build faster than they can talk.”
Daito Manabe-
Framestore – a super-impressive showreel of clients from Batman, Spiderman, Gravity, Vanity Fair, Game of Thrones and hundreds more.
Taika Waititi – showed the trailer of his upcoming vampire black-comedy, ‘Delicious Necks’ and launched a poster competition with a hilarious and badly graphic designed powerpoint presentation.
M/M Paris – Alpha Men alphabet, Balenciaga campaigns.
Mike Mizrahi – On theatres; ‘those are the places that we connect. The St James is next. We have to save that building.” “Never settle for mediocrity.” “Say yes.” “Say yes, then figure out what the fuck you’re going to do next.” “End well.” (Ends talk with marching girls and glitter cannon on stage at finale.)
