"Told in Silence" by Rebecca Connell tells the story of 18 year old Violet, who marries her boss after a whirlwind affair. He dies two years later and we learn that Violet now lives with her parents-in-law, who are conservative characters living in a large house in an English village.
At first I found Violet difficult to relate to, as I found some of her decisions incredibly frustrating, but I persevered and was rewarded with a major plot twist as her Father-in-law Harvey takes up the story from his perspective.
From here things get interesting, as we begin to understand why Harvey acts as he does.
The book reflects upon how deceptions and the desire to keep up appearances can distort our realities and cause unbearable and avoidable grief in our lives. Connell writes a well paced story with interesting twists and turns.
I am not a big fan of ambiguous endings, but it didn’t put me off the book as a whole.
It is part thriller, part character piece and would be a good read for a weekend away.
