It’s like two of my favourite worlds colliding: Karen Walker is selling opshop handknits with all the proceeds going to the charity stores. The fashion designer is launching a partnership with Dove Hospice today, Wednesday 13th June until this Saturday 16th of June, at the Karen Walker Newmarket store, Playpark, with the first ever pop-up Dove Hospice Shop.
Opshopping and fashion stylists and designers are long-time friends with many drawing on retro and vintage looks for their current collections. Now, you can buy the real deal at her store. I think it opens up a whole world of buying secondhand for many customers who might not have tried it. Buying quality over quantity and buying secondhand are great ways to combat a fast-fashion mentality of over consumption and you can’t get lower air miles than a handknit from a local charity store!
The first pop-up will sell Karen’s edit of pre-loved hand knits that were donated to the charity and they’re dry-cleaned ready for sale. All the hand knitted sweaters will retail for $75 and all of this money will go back to Dove Hospice to continue providing free care for people with life-threatening or terminal illnesses. As Dove Hospice receives no government funding, a large portion of their operating costs are funded by their shops.
