What’s new in fashion: August 2020

NZ’s First Calvin Klein Store

Calvin Klein announced the opening of the first freestanding CALVIN KLEIN UNDERWEAR store in New Zealand, located in Auckland at Commercial Bay, featuring the brand’s minimal and modern aesthetic through the use of black mirror panels and crisp white glass. These contrasting materials are counterbalanced with warm white oak accents for column enclosures and floor fixtures. Upon entering, a digital screen displays the latest brand campaigns.

Coinciding with the store opening is the launch of the 2020 CALVIN KLEIN UNDERWEAR campaign in the New Zealand market. A continuation of the #MYCALVINS movement, the campaign, fronted by a cast chosen for their willingness to bare themselves to the world, including Justin Bieber, Maluma, Lil Nas X, SZA, Kendall Jenner and Lay Zhang.

Tommy Hilfiger Opens in Commercial Bay

Speaking of Commercial Bay, iconic Americana heritage fashion brand Tommy Hilfiger has opened the first store in New Zealand. The exterior façade fuses high-gloss white lacquered wood and polished stainless steel with accents in the brand’s signature red, white and blue colour palette.

The interior takes cue from the nautical lifestyle – one of Tommy Hilfiger’s longstanding sources of inspiration. Illuminated, white lacquered wall panels are set against rustic oak flooring. Furnishings are rendered in high-gloss white wood, with accents in polished stainless steel, walnut wood and glass. Alternatives to Leather with Kind Soles

Deuce’s curated edit is part of our newly launched Kind Soles collection, a considered edit of sustainable designs. Thoughtfully designed in New Zealand, the collection consists of three unisex sneakers, each playing a part in protecting the planet.  Two of the sneakers, Jax & Jango, feature a transparent leather-look material called Bio Veg that’s made out of Bio Polyols with elements derived from plants. The main raw material is field corn. Bio Veg is PETA approved vegan and LCA accredited (life cycle assessment).

The third style, Gaia, is made with Repreve, a traceable fibre made out of recycled plastic bottles. The lightweight material offsets the use of petroleum in the manufacture, emitting fewer greenhouse gases and conserves water and energy in the process.

Wearing sustainable fashion – boots made from recycled plastic, by Mi Piaci. Fashion brands that are wanting to be sustainable are searching for new ways to use existing materials and recycling plastic has got to be top of the list, as our landfill and oceans fill with unwanted single use plastics. This stretchy fabrication reuses plastics in brand new, stylish shoes. A great idea by this New Zealand, family-owned brand.

ICEBREAKER TO GO PLASTIC FREE BY 2023

Icebreaker has released a transparency report on its ethical ad sustainability practices. Highlights form the report include a commitment to have all plastic-free materials by 2023. Today icebreaker uses 87% natural fibres within its range. Icebreaker has removed 59 styles with higher plastic percentage from its collection which had a retail value of $11.2M AUD, solely because they did not align with the brand’s purpose.

Up to 152L of water is used in a laundry wash, and up to 700,000 microfibres are released. Washing clothes has a significant impact on the planet. Icebreaker’s merino is naturally odour-free, to help keep your washing to a minimum and really only wash a garment when it needs it.
