This morning, Tuesday 16th February 2016, New Zealand-based fashion designer Karen Walker showed for the 20th consecutive season at New York Fashion Week. FW16 ‘Magnetic’ was inspired by photographer Berenice Abbott’s personal style, a mix of no fuss utility with a good amount of joie de vivre.
Here’s what Karen Walker says about the collection…
“The no-nonsense approach is fundamental in the Karen Walker world. Not to say that Karen doesn’t embrace all things wonderful and left-of-center. In this way, Karen’s a bit like her 20th century muse – hardworking photographer Berenice Abbott whose personal style was a mix of no fuss utility with a good amount of joie de vivre.
A glossed-cotton Constructivist dungaree is shown over a gold skivvy. Brightly coloured wool windowpane alongside electro magnetic themed prints on lace and silk crêpe de Chine add an artist’s touch to the workwear silhouettes and khaki canvas and leathers.
Industrial-dandy flourishes throughout are planted firmly on the ground by confident flat shoes and Chelsea boots.
Karen Walker Eyewear adds strength and flair to a wardrobe that is both fully functional and ready for the next assignment.
Berenice gracefully borrowed from the boys and carved her own path. One of the most independent and respected photographers of the 20th century, she traveled through the decades with an aesthetic that never faltered – utilitarian with an air of androgynous chic. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is style.”
‘Magnetic’ will be available in the Southern Hemisphere for Spring/Summer 16 from August 2016.
