We are honoured to have a guest reporter, Madeleine de Young of Madicattt.nz, review the Miromoda show – a group runway show dedicated to Maori fashion designers – at New Zealand Fashion Week 2015. Miromoda is one of the most eye-catching and original shows of the week on schedule each year.
Paisley meets tiki on the programme for the Miromoda showcase – diggin’ it! Miromoda 2015 was dominated by quilting ala Barbour, and of course, black and whites.

What really stood out for me were the bright pops of colour; from the stunning red silks from Kristy Bedi (above) to the fluorescent acrylic hand bags from Kylie Mangan (below).

As per usual Shona Tawhiao (above) drew a huge amount of attention – I think pretty much every phone in the room was raised as her first look hit the runway – but that was only after everyone had gasped as Hori and Mimi designer Hohepa Thompson got on one knee and proposed to his partner in fashion and love, Mia Brennan. It was rather appropriate considering their collection – The Hangi Collection was intended to represent whānau, kai and bringing people together.

In the spirit of Miromoda, it was Bobby Luke with his label, Campbell Luke, that made me smile most. This range – Bespoke Memories of a Pā Kid – combines the spirit of post colonial Pā style with modern design. Any Pā kid would smile seeing a tea towel snuck onto the runway in a fashionable way.
