We headed into the Zambesi showroom recently to view the upcoming Spring/Summer ranges for men and women by Zambesi and be talked through the collection – presented in a static display on mannequins – by designer Liz Findlay. Here’s what they had to say about their new range, and the photos I snapped on the day.
A team spirit embodies the Zambesi Spring/Summer 2015-16 collection, cleverly uniting divergent design principles. Within the elements of minimalist design, a vital energy comes out to play. The avant-garde runs alongside reborn classics. Oversized pieces allow experimentation with silhouettes. Pure Japanese cottons and sportswear fabrics are used unexpectedly in tailored garments, subtly referencing the uniform.
The Zambesi Outfitters archival 80’s logo is flocked onto fronts and backs of garments in eyelet and lining, a ‘team logo’ to be worn with pride.
Oversized tanks and t-shirts contradict narrow trousers. A vintage market-find trench is reinterpreted in a summer weight, cut with a mesh back and suiting front.
Tailoring is dressed down to create a casual vibe, as a sportswear influence prevails throughout the collection.
Functional and minimal in its simplicity, the collection unifies a passion for fabric with texture and form, and stays true to the ever-evolving nature of the brand, proudly Made in New Zealand.
Below: a few of Thread.co.nz’s favourite pieces from SS15/16:
The beading on this cream dress like an Art Deco flapper gown from The Great Gatsby.
Knitted ribbing on collars and cuffs bear the brand name, akin to college sports.
Basketball singlets and mesh backed caps play-off with suiting.
