Twenty-seven names opened NZ Fashion Week with an outdoor show under umbrellas with Auckland Viaduct as a backdrop for their AW16 collection entitled Still Life.
“Outdoors? In August. In Auckland. That’s my blowdry gone on the first morning” I overhead people saying as I perched on the bleachers and the rain continued to fall. The highly-organised production team was busily handing out Resene umbrellas which created a rainbow effect on the otherwise dreary day.
Then, the models came out, and the rain was forgotten, and a fashion moment began. They posed in front of the photographer’s pit then took their places in a choreographed ‘still life’ – as the collection’s name aptly described – and as the court began to fill, the location became a tableau with a backdrop of the city skyline. The rain actually worked in their favour; and the photo of the colourful umbrellas made it onto worldwide Getty Images for the day.
Against the Auckland Skytower and harbour, models wore shades of peach and caramel with over-sized knitted wraps, beautiful long wool coats and gathered-waist dresses. Garments were in five categories, a Peach set, Sand set, Herringbone set, Navy set, and a Black set, styled by Dan Ahwa. Pieces have been named for feminist contemporaries in a homage to these women: Eleanor Dress, Retrospect Wool Tee, Judy Wool Tee, Chicago Coat.
Makeup by Kiekie Stanners for MAC had peachy golden eyes and a dark lip option and a pale lip option. Hair was created by Michael Beel, Bex Brent and the L’Oreal Professionnel hair team.
twenty-seven names based their AW16 show at NZFW as always, on a work of art, drawing on the art history background of Rachel Easting, who along with Anjali Stewart, have designed the label. ‘Still Life’ references Judy Chicago’s iconic feminist artwork with a table for 25 women who “question, imagine, challenge, shake, and inspire.”
