The V C Andrews novels Flowers in the Attic & Petals on the Wind were pretty much defining – and polarising – novels of my adolescence. They were followed by sequels If There Be Thorns, Seeds of Yesterday, and Garden of Shadows. Everyone at school either read them, wasn’t allowed to read them, or was too scared to. Which were you?
Nowadays I suppose we have dystopian sci-fi novels such as The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, and YA novels that deal with love and death and illness such as The Fault in Our Stars by John Green, and many, many more.
Now, as an adult, you can relive Flowers in the Attic & Petals on the Wind this Monday 20th and Tuesday 21st October as it’s screening at 8.30pm on Vibe on IGLOO starring Kiernan Shipka, Ellen Burstyn, Mason Dye, and Heather Graham.
I wonder what it’ll be like, not only seeing it as a screen adaptation, but also with maturity seeing it years later. As a mother, nothing you do is as bad as Corinne! She pretty much sets the standard for Bad Parenting.
Will it be as controversial nowadays? The novels have become cult classics and best sellers, and tell the story of the Dollanganger family with all their twisted salacious secrets. It’ll be pretty steamy viewing and also pretty uncomfortable but must-see viewing. It’s across two nights not two weeks, so I’ll need to block out my diary now for some Attic time.
