Tonight Thread is heading in to the New Zealand premiere screening of Batman vs Superman and we’re loving Wonder Woman’s new look in the film ahead of her eponymously titled film due for release in 2017.
Origin of Wonder Woman
I remember fondly watching Wonder Woman played by Lynda Carter in the 1975–1979 Wonder Woman TV series, kicking bad guy butt wearing All-American stars and stripes pants and bustier, but well before the TV show, she was a comic book superhero created by the American psychologist and writer William Moulton Marston and first published by DC Comics during World War II.
Amazon Warrior Princess
Amazons were around looong before the Internet bookstore. The WW character is actually an Amazonian warrior princess, based on the Amazons of Greek mythology. She is the original Princess Diana – not married to Prince Charles – but princess in her Greek homeland and known as Princess Diana of Themyscira, and abroad under the alias Diana Prince. The Superhero Known As Prince doesn’t make doves cry but has superhuman powers and battle weapons that include the Lasso of Truth, the coolest bracelets until The Bangles, and a tiara which she hurls at baddies.
Feminist Icon
As a strong female icon she is a feminist heroine and fights for justice, love, peace, and gender equality, all of which she does in great shoes, making her doubly a hero in my own eyes.
Gal Godot
It seems a perfect coincidence that the actress’ first name is ‘Gal’ which is a slang name for women! Warner Bros. has cast the absolutely stunning model-now-actress Gal Gadot in the sought-after role of Wonder Woman in the 2016 film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Incredibly this is Wonder Woman’s first feature film debut in seventy years of comic book and television stardom. From here, Gadot will also star in the title role in the solo live-action film Wonder Woman in mid-2017.
Xena the Warrior Princess
Xena, played by New Zealand actress Lucy Lawless, wore a costume with strong similarities to the new Wonder Woman look. Xena was also based on ancient Amazon lore. The costume has a darker and I must say more kickass edge and a lot less American milkshake girl than the spangled banner hotpants of tele.
It is sexy yet powerful, and features moulded dark leather, with a miniskirt and arm sleeves.
I can’t WAIT to see her in action in the film tonight!
