On My Desk: New In Beauty in Skincare, Winter 2020

What you take off is as important as what you put on.

This applies in fashion, and also in skincare.

Hydrate while you exfoliate. Put moisture back in to your skin while you remove impurities and dead skin.

Dermalogica Hydro Masque Exfoliant, used for 5 minutes once or twice a week, smooths and renews for hydrated, luminous skin. It has no plastic beads which are harmful to marine life. It uses bamboo minerals to gently exfoliate, then moisturizes with snow mushroom, Phytolipids, sugar beets, and cucumber extract.

Massage in circular motions until spheres disappear then brew a nice cup of tea and relax for 5 minutes, then rinse off. Hydrated, inside and out.

Where to buy: Dermalogica Hydro Masque Exfoliant is $108 at Dermalogica skin centres, department storers, Life Pharmacies, and online at www.dermalogica.co.nz

Don’t buy your dad an ocean cruise, get him Ocean Cruz! Okay, that sounded a lot better in my head. For the environmentally friendly Dad, you can’t beat these skincare products for father’s day in recyclable packaging, and shampoo and conditioner dry bars that remove the need for plastic bottles. I love the handcrafted soap bar in the front of the pic that looks like surf.

Where to buy: Buy Ahhh bodycare online at https://ahhh.nz/ and at selected New World supermarkets.

When Shane Young, the co-creator of Essano, New Zealand’s no.1 grocery natural skincare brand, was having problems with irritated skin he tried all the sensitive skin ranges available around but found they only made it worse. He created this Essano Men range as a plant-based, natural alternative, and 46% of New Zealand male skincare buyers say that natural ingredients is important to them when they choose, so it is becoming more the norm nowadays. The range is free from Parabens, SLEs, ALEs, PPGs, animal testing, Silicones, Mineral Oils, Phthaltes, GMOs, and Ethoxylates.

Where to buy: You can buy Essano Man at Countdown, New World, and Pak ‘n’ Save supermarkets.

Wrinkles AND pimples? That doesn’t seem fair. You’d think you get pimples when you’re young, and wrinkles when you’re older, but it doesn’t always work like that.

Chronic stress and hormonal imbalances are putting our bodies to the test and two skin problems- adult acne and accelerated skin ageing- can happen at the same time- but is there a unified solution to both?

Dermalogica has combined the two solutions in one skincare product for the first time. Salicylic Acid for breakouts and Retinol for lines and pigmentation, are combined in Retinol Clearing Oil.

I’ve had a breakout I think from lockdown stress and I’ve been using this every night and it’s really working; I saw a reduction in breakouts overnight. I’m taking before and after photos and trying it for a week to see the difference.

Remember- only use Retinol at night as it’s a form of Vitamin A so will make your skin more sun sensitive. Apply at night under your moisturizer.

Where to buy: Dermalogica Retinol Clearing Oil is $151 at Dermalogica skin centres, department storers, Life Pharmacies, and online at www.dermalogica.co.nz

This cupcake is ALREADY GONE but I paused to photograph it in honour of Auckland made skincare brand Essano Collagen Boost serum becoming the NO 1 SERUM IN NEW ZEALAND outselling all the big guns such as Olay, Nivea and L’Oreal, which is HUGE news. Kiwis love it, nice work Essano.

Where to buy: You can buy Essano at Countdown, New World, and Pak ‘n’ Save supermarkets.

Latest on my shelf: use this after cleansing for hydrated, radiant skin. I can’t wait to use this product as I was waiting for it to be released.

Elizabeth Arden has added Ceramide Micro Capsule Skin Replenishing Essence to its Ceramide skincare family, for crystal clear, radiant skin.

What does it do? The lightweight formula helps skin’s natural production of moisture-boosting Ceramides, using orchid stem cells, red algae, and tsubaki oil ferment – combined to nourish and hydrate and plump skin.

Where to buy: Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Micro Capsule Skin Replenishing Essence is $95 at Elizabeth Arden counters nationwide.

In fact, I WAS needing a boost- so these little beauties have come at just the right time.

Trilogy Skincare Booster Treatment range has two new products, joining the original Vitamin C Booster Treatment which is formulated to brighten skin and improve radiance.

The two new releases are Hyaluronic Acid Booster Treatment to hydrate, plump, and smooth using hyaluronic acid and rosehip oil; and Bakuchiol Booster Treatment for smoothing lines and improving the signs of ageing with a vitamin A alternative bakuchoil, squalene, and hemp seed oil.

Where to buy: Trilogy Booster Series are $44.95 each from Life Pharmacy, Unichem, selected Farmers stores, department stores and health stores. See www.trilogyproducts.com

Face masques and face masks are the perfect lockdown combo. Both types of masks, save your skin. I sewed face masks with vintage fabrics I had, including a tea-towel. Also, sending me wine and chocolates while we are all staying at home, was excellent timing.

The newly -released RAWKANVAS Clarified Red Wine Mask is sure to become another cult classic for the brand. It uses hero ingredient Pinot noir red grape for a deep skin detox to reinvigorate brightness. The stimulating treatment mask is a blend of exfoliating and clarifying clay that’s essentially a microdermabrasion treatment at home.

How to use: After cleansing, apply a thin layer to slightly damp skin and leave on for 5 minutes then rinse off. You may experience a warm, tingling sensation, as a result of the ingredients effecting circulation and blood flow. You can dilute the product by mixing it with water first, or by applying it to blemishes or by just using it on congested areas such as the nose and skin only.

Where to buy: RAWKANVAS natural skincare is available online at www.rawkanvas.co.nz and at 18 Farmers stores.

Weleda has beautiful products for older skin types and those wanting more hydration, with natural skincare that’s rich in botanical hero ingredients including Evening Primrose and Pomegranate.

The ranges include an Age Revitalising Night Cream, Eye Cream with Evening Primrose, and Firming Face Serum with Pomegranate. I’m looking forward to using this Evening Primrose Smoothing Eye Cream, it looks amazing.

Elizabeth Arden White Tea has released the latest beautiful fragrance, Mandarin Blossom.

It has Top Notes of Mandarin, Bergamot, Lemon, Exotic Fruits; Heart Notes of Orange Flower, Jasmine, Neroli, White Tea; and Base Notes of Luminous Musks, Cedarwood, Osmanthus, and Ambrox.

Perfumer Gil Clavien describes the inspiration for White Tea Mandarin Blossom; “To create White Tea Mandarin Blossom, I wanted to encapsulate a feeling of vibrancy and happiness – of experiencing a moment of energy completely taking over you. I was inspired by a vacation I spent in Sicily, smelling the mandarin flower trees before the fruit bloomed and sipping tea with friends as fresh sea water misted over us. Recreating this moment, the fragrance radiates bright mandarin, comforting white tea and captivating musks that, for me, represent the kindness and warmth of the people and ambience of Sicily. White Tea Mandarin Blossom takes me there – to that lively and joyous moment.”

Where to buy: Elizabeth Arden White Tea Mandarin Blossom is $50 available at Elizabeth Arden counters nationwide.
