I’m attempting the Life Changing Art of Tidying Up

I’m attempting to de-clutter my life by sorting out my wardrobes and cupboards by means of  Japanese expert Marie Kondo’s book: ‘The Life Changing Art of Tidying Up‘. I’m on to my second wardrobe of three in 6 hours- mess seems to get worse before it gets better hey? Who’s tried cleaning out their closet? I find I get emotionally attached to items with sentimental value and that might be useful one day and find it hard to clear out stuff.

If you are serious about decluttering, I recommend this book. There are many great blogs online which go into the process in detail (I enjoyed onekingslane blog post, and The Guardian review) and Marie Kondo has youtube clips with an interpreter and also videos and tips on her own website, tidyingup.com.

The main gist of the book is that you keep objects that bring you joy and get rid of (donate, sell, throw) the rest. This doesn’t apply to useful necessary household objects of course, just clothes, books, and stuff all over the shelves. You have to touch the object and feel it, and thank it for its service. This releases it and you can pass it on.

Now, my wardrobe is much cleaner, and I set about looking after the clothes that remained: do they need buttons, or a wash, or a press?

With great timing, I received this flash new iron to test drive. What’s nicer than freshly ironed clothes? Especially when they are hanging on their own hangers rather than my previous method, which was shoved in so tight they didn’t even NEED hangers. Pictured below: Russell Hobbs new Smooth IQ with a wrinkle defence system technology (I know, you’re thinking they should go into anti-ageing skincare!) and my favourite bit – a press button steamer to steam wrinkles out of vertically-hanging garments like they do in fashion stores.

It uses similar technology to that found in hair straighteners, like your ghds with a soleplate infused with tourmaline to reduce static and friction and is infused with fabric softening agents. There’s a fraction too much friction? Not with this baby. Smooth IQ is available in two models: SmoothIQ PRO Iron (RRP $229.99) and Smooth IQ PLUS (RRP $199.99) www.russellhobbs.co.nz
