Short or Long? What should you choose? High school can be so much more than worrying about the next exam. It’s about making lasting memories – especially on the night of the Ball – prom night. It is one of the major events of school and of course it all starts with finding the ideal dress. But before you head off to the dress shop, should you get a short or long gown?
Long Dresses
Traditionally, prom dresses are long. There are so many long dresses out there to suit pretty much all body types and tastes. From elegant slits and a variety of silhouettes, you can choose slim and classy or princess ball-gowns. Even mermaid dresses suit some girls. There can be a few downfalls to getting a long dress for prom. Alteration costs are one of them. If you’re not particularly tall, you’re going to need to get the dress hemmed so you can avoid tripping when walking and dancing.
Short Dresses
This is where the prom dress shop can come in handy with a short dress option. It gives you the freedom to dance all night long and if you’re petite, a short dress will make you look taller. The show off your legs so paired with glamorous heels, a short dress can make you look like you grew a couple of inches overnight. What’s more, a short prom dress can save you money by not having to be hemmed. Here’s another pro: short dresses are more versatile.
Which Dress to Choose?
You need to take your school dress code and the venue into account. If it is being held at a fancy place and not at school, it’s a good idea to choose a long, elegant and more formal dress. Just remember that some schools won’t let girls come in wearing a gown that is too short. No matter which length you choose from the prom dress shop, make sure the dress reflects your personal style to make sure you’ll feel fabulous all night.
Dressing for Your Shape
Besides deciding on a short or long prom dress, you’ll need to dress to complement your body shape. Here are a few tips.
• Busty – if you have narrow hips, a large bust and fairly straight waist, choose a dress that draws attention to your face and balances out the upper body and narrower lower body. A dress that curves to the hips and creates a defined waist is ideal. A short dress that shows off your legs will work well.
• Apple – if you’re an apple shape, you carry your weight in your middle. Chances are you have great legs and an undefined waist so choose an empire waistline and short dress.
• Slender – if you have a top to bottom thin frame, accentuate your physique with a fitted gown. A long dress with a belt around the waist or an elegant slit will suit your shape.
• Hourglass – if you’re curvy, you will have proportionate hips and bust and your upper body is balances with your leg length. Choose a dress that accentuates your best asset – your well-defined waist. V-necklines, open necklines, natural waistlines and wrap dresses will all work for you.
• Pear – you’re a pear shape if your hips are larger than your bust and you have a well-defined waist. In this case, your waist is your top asset so you might as well flaunt it. To dress for a pear shape, you’ll want to add volume to your upper body, draw attention away from your lower body and towards your small waist. To create such a balanced silhouette go for a dress with a fitted top or even an A-line skirt.
• Petite – if you’re under 5 foot 3 inches, a short dress is for you. Choose a dress with an asymmetrical hemline that will make you look taller. Longer dresses will overwhelm your frame.
